Managing the transition from school to university

Date: Thursday March 16, 2017

Audience: Deputy Heads, Heads of Boarding and Boarding Staff

Course content: It is often felt that boarding gives students greater skills in dealing with the numerous changes and challenges that they will face at university, but it could also be argued that with all of their physical and emotional needs catered for in a boarding environment they can often feel lost when they find themselves in a new place where these needs are more difficult to access. This course will highlight some of the additional skills that would help boarders enjoy a smooth transition from school to university life and will help staff prepare an exit strategy for boarders about to leave school and enter into a more independent lifestyle.

  • Communication skills in meeting new people, making friends and influencing people
  • Attaining a good work/social life balance
  • Managing finances and creating a weekly/terml budget
  • Accessing support agencies that can help when challenges and problems come along
