Why should you attend?

The medical centre and medical team in a school are often involved in the support and care of every pupil in a school. It is a busy and fast paced environment that requires staff to work closely together. For Lead Nurses/Medical Centre Managers, leading this team and provision is a significant job. This seminar will enable delegates to gain further knowledge and ideas for leading a team of nurses and learn how to promote the development of a medical centre to ensure it meets the criteria required by inspections, the needs of the school and pupils.

Objectives:

  1. To identify leadership and managerial skills
  2. To learn what makes a good team and recognise your teams’ individual skills
  3. To raise the profile of the nursing team within the school
  4. How to support and develop each member of your nursing team.

 

Programme:

10 – 10:30        Tea/Coffee on arrival

10:30                Welcome and Introduction

10:35                Session 1 – Leaders or managers - learning the difference between the two and how to lead/manage effectively and appropriately to get the best out of your team

11:30                Tea/Coffee

11:45                Session 2 – What is a team? - looking at teams, identifying difficulties and exploring how to get the best from members of the team, playing to strengths, using appraisals, CPD, induction, job descriptions, supervision.

12:45                Lunch

13:30                Session 3 – Making a team effective - break out sessions to identify knowledge and skills to take back and implement.

14:30                Tea/Coffee

14:45                Session 4 – Raising the profile of the nursing team in the school

Wider context and/or application to the Boarding sector:

It looks at managing medical issues within boarding, training, support, development, working with wider members of the community in a school.

Speaker: Jane Graham, Lead Nurse, St Teresa’s, Effingham and BSA Nurse Advisor

Jane is a registered sick children’s nurse; she trained at Great Ormond Street and worked for 20 years on PICU as senior sister and practice educator. As part of the unit’s CATS trauma team she spent a lot of time teaching clinically or at South Bank University. More recently she moved into school nursing setting up medical centres in two schools. She continues at St Teresa’s School in Effingham as Lead Nurse. She runs a Surrey clinical supervision group for independent school nurses and has her own business in First Aid training.

Jane is married with 3 school age children.
