A COLWYN Bay pupil is celebrating after becoming a qualified pilot.
Alex Sharples, aged 17, an upper sixth student at Rydal Penrhos School, achieved the qualification after a summer of training, written and practical exams for the Private Pilot’s License.
The unsettled weather over the summer made it a challenge to get airborne and complete the required 45 hours flying time, but Alex overcame the final hurdle last weekend after passing a two-hour skills test in the air, and his final two exams to get his 'wings'.
Earlier this year, the Llandudno resident was one of only five successful applicants out of a field of 400 for the highly sought-after places on a flying scholarship programme operated by The Honourable Company of Air Pilots which sponsored him for his PPL course.
He will receive his licence at a London ceremony in November.
A school spokesman, said: “Alex has cherished a life-long dream of becoming a pilot with the RAF, and his family are thrilled that qualifying for his PPL takes him one step closer to his dream.
“He has successfully passed the initial RAF interview and the next part of the selection process is for him to attend RAF Cranwell for further tests.”
