A group of staff at a Colwyn Bay school will be tackling the Conwy Half Marathon in aid of a school charity project.
Rydal Penrhos Headmaster Patrick Lee-Browne, Head of Sixth Form Paul Lavery, Economics and Business Studies teacher Paul Sanders, Estates Manager Richard Smith and Registrar Nicky Lee-Browne will tackle the 13.1 mile course on Sunday, November 22.
They will be raising money for the Development Studies Centre in Mbarara, Uganda, where Rydal Penrhos is heavily involved in charity work.
Mr Sanders, said: “Every two years the school visits Uganda where links are forged with a range of organisations and communities.
“One of the agreements this year, when a group of staff and pupils visited in the summer, was to agree to raise £1,000 to support a student undertaking the Business Management course at the DSC. This money will cover the course fees for one year.
“The DSC helps to equip students, usually between 16-19 years old, with the skills and knowledge to succeed as an entrepreneur.
“However, a key factor is to support the students in their own communities to share their new found knowledge and understanding with the wider community.”
The staff are now in the final stages of preparation ahead of the half marathon, which takes in picturesque sites such as Conwy Castle, the Great Orme and Llandudno’s West Shore.
In July pupils and staff at Rydal Penrhos embarked on a number of charity initiatives in Uganda, and recently received praise from the African International Christian Ministry for their efforts.
“Many young Ugandans live in abject poverty and the DSC truly allows for simple skills to be passed around local people and help them to better support themselves and their families, whilst becoming increasingly self-sufficient. It truly is a worthwhile cause,” added Mr Sanders.
Anyone wishing to donate can make cheques payable to Rydal Penrhos School and mark the backs of the cheques/envelope with Morgan House/DSC fund and send to Mr Paul Sanders, Rydal Penrhos School, Pwllycrochan Avenue, Colwyn Bay, LL29 7BT.
