A Preparatory School relay team came away with medals from this year’s Urdd National Gala.
Following their success at the regional heats last November, the talented young Rydal Penrhos swimmers descended on South Wales for the event, which took place on Saturday, January 23 at the Wales National Swimming Pool, Cardiff.
Despite coming up against some of the best young swimmers in the country, the Colwyn Bay school team managed to come home with two silver medals to show for their efforts.
The Year 3 and 4 boys’ freestyle relay team of Liam Farrell, Cieran Milligan, Ethan Akroyd and James Gilman put in a fantastic display to achieve second place, finishing in a time of 1:29.26.
There was even more success for the same foursome in the boys’ medley relay, where they also achieved their second silver of the event.
Rydal Penrhos were unlucky not to claim a third relay medal, with the Year 5 and 6 boys’ medley relay team of Matthew Stubbins, Zac Roberts, Josh Stewart and Laurence Richardson in a very creditable fourth place.
Osca Clark and John Williams, the two individual qualifiers from the school, also failed to finish in the medal places but swam well in the face of stern competition.
Head of swimming Maciej Ruszkowski, said: “The competition this year was incredibly tough but it was fantastic to see our young swimmers putting in very good performances.
“Special praise must go to Liam, Cieran, Ethan and James for their exceptional efforts in claiming a pair of silver medals, and I think we deserved to come home with more.
“Nevertheless this experience will stand them in good stead and this positive performance will stand them in good stead for the future.”
