Thousands of red lanterns were dotted around the city to welcome in the “Year of the Monkey”, with the four day celebration finishing in style in-front of the Weekend Activities group.

At midday, Albert Square was alight with martial arts and dance displays followed by the famous Dragon Parade to Chinatown.

Both Chinatown and the square hosted stages featuring traditional acrobatics, music and dance as well as street performances, funfair rides and a mouth-watering array of street food.

The celebrations were brought to a spectacular conclusion with a magnificent fireworks display.

A Rydal Penrhos spokesman, said: “We have a number of Chinese pupils here and it is great to give them an opportunity to celebrate the Chinese New Year along with our fellow pupils.

“It was a fabulous occasion and one that our Weekend Activities group enjoyed immensely. Manchester was a hive of activity throughout the celebrations and it really was a privilege to be a part of.”
