A number of Preparatory School chess stars are celebrating after achieving success in a national competition.
No fewer than four Rydal Penrhos pupils competed at the UK Chess Gigafinals, which were held in Manchester on Saturday, July 9.
After a highly competitive day of action, Fleur Roberts, Tristan Griffiths, Liam Farrell and Jonathan Osbourne all advanced to the Plate finals of the competition, which will be held in September.
This is the latest in a long line of success for the pupils, who have achieved a number of achievements at both regional and national events this year.
The school’s U11 and U9 teams performed exceptionally at the National Primary Schools’ Team Chess Competition, reaching the semi-final stage.
Farrell, Griffiths and Grace Watkins were part of the U9 Cheshire and north Wales team that made it through the Inter-Zonal Northern Chess final, while a total of eight pupils reached the semi-finals of the UK Chess Challenge.
Prep School head Roger McDuff, said: “This is yet another tremendous achievement from our young chess players, who have shown a great deal of enthusiasm and talent for what is a difficult sport to master.
“Our chess team have achieved so much this year and that is in no small part to the wonderful efforts of our Head of Chess Andrew Camp and all other staff and parents who help our pupils reach their potential.”
