Felsted School drama student, Ethan Monks (Yr 13 from Saffron Walden), has been accepted into the National Youth Music Theatre of Great Britain. Ethan, who wants to pursue a career in acting after his A Levels, was initially selected for the National Youth Theatre (NYT) in 2015 from over 5000 applicants. To then be accepted into the highly selective musical sector of one of the most competitive theatre institutions in the world is a great first step in his career.
The NYT gives talented young actors the chance to attend casting auditions for major productions in film, theatre and TV. Ethan completed a two week intensive acting summer course and performed in a 100 year anniversary play about World War I, which was watched by various theatre directors. NYT alumni include Eddie Redmayne, Helen Mirren, Daniel Day Lewis and Daniel Craig.
The National Youth Music Theatre provides exceptional opportunities in musical theatre through workshops, master classes and the chances to work with industry professionals.
After his A Levels, Ethan will have the opportunity to audition for professional West End shows, alongside his university studies. Ethan has already taken starring roles in Felsted theatre productions, including his portrayal of Pontius Pilate in last year's Jesus Christ Superstar!
Ethan comments “Being accepted into such a prestigious institution was the first time I allowed myself to think of the prospect of acting as a career. I think acting develops people’s emotional awareness and I would encourage all young people to try it.”
There are many opportunities for those interested in drama at Felsted, from theatre trips to annual school plays, the most recent of which was a fantastic double-cast performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Drama Scholarships are available to children from age 11 who are showing genuine talent and potential. More information can be found at http://www.felsted.org/DramaScholarships.
