Young singers rose to the occasion when they were the guest choir for Choral Evensong in the inspirational surroundings of Durham Cathedral.
The combined Chapel and harmony choirs from Barnard Castle School performed in front of the Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham Mrs Sue Snowdon, the Mayor of Barnard Castle John Blissett and his consort Kelly Blissett and the Dean of the Cathedral The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett.
Durham City’s Deputy Mayor Councillor Bill Moir and Deputy Mayoress Councillor Katie Corrigan attended, as well as parents, staff, former staff and Old Barnardians.
The choir was conducted by Barnard Castle School’s director of music Simon Dearsley and accompanied by the Prep School director of music Dr Robin Harrison. Headmaster Alan Stevens read the first lesson.
Singers in the 40-strong choir ranged in age from Prep School pupil Jack Edmunds to sixth form soloist Alex Thompson.
Mr Dearsley said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be able to return to Durham Cathedral and a wonderful experience for the children to sing in such historic and stunning surroundings.
“I was extremely proud of how they performed and conducted themselves, and very grateful for the very many appreciative comments we received from those who attended.”
Prayers were said for the school, the school chapel and Mr Stevens and his wife Heather as they prepare to leave for a new life in Malaysia.
The guests congregated afterwards for a reception in Prior’s Hall.
