Staff claim bragging rights in annual Leavers' football match
21st May 2018

Bragging rights went to Rydal Penrhos staff as they secured a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Leavers’ in their annual football match at Llandudno FC.

An even start to proceedings saw both sides miss chances, before the game was brought to life courtesy of a sensational 30-yard strike from Adam Aslam-Baskefield that flew past Kieron McNamara into the top corner.

Things got even better for the staff soon after when Dean Jones prodded home from close range following a corner, while the Leavers’ continued to be frustrated by the formidable man-marking performance of Dr Lewis on midfield dangerman Matthew Trumper.

Elliot Wilkinson’s pace was causing problems but his approach play was not matched by his finishing with Henry Maitland-Davies’ air kick another standout highlight from the contest.

The Leavers’ did manage to get back into the tie through a wonderful effort from Head Boy Alex Benfield, who darted past three defenders before firing a powerful drive past Mr Baker.

This provoked a strong response from the staff team, who composed themselves and restored their two-goal cushion shortly after the restart when Dean played in Mr Stock, and the forward produced a composed finish past Kieron to double their tally once again.

Credit to the leavers’ for showing tremendous character throughout, but they were left exposed in the closing stages after throwing everything forward in pursuit of a second, and this time Mr Lavery was the beneficiary as he rounded off the scoring in style.

The match was refereed superbly by Headmaster Simon Smith, with son Jamie Smith and fellow Lower Sixth Form pupil Ewan Luke tasked with running the line.

Head of Modern Foreign Languages Susan Livingstone also made history by becoming the first ever woman to compete in the showcase.
