Trio perform well at annual F24 Greenpower Race
12th July 2018

A team of motorsport enthusiasts represented Rydal Penrhos at a high-profile annual race recently.

Chay Bonnington, Henry Battersby and Jacob Cousins, Year 8 pupils at the school, formed the Rydal Penrhos team that competed at the annual F24 Greenpower Race, which took place at Anglesey Circuit on Tuesday, July 3.

The trio worked incredibly hard to improve all elements of the vehicle under the expert guidance of Design Technology head Phil Sutton and his staff, and things looked promising during their practice run when they secured one of the fasts times in the kit car category.

Race one saw the car experience some electrical problems that forced them to pit several times, but they still managed to turn in an impressive display to secure a fifth place finish in their category.

A shirt break for repairs followed before race two, where the Rydal Penrhos team gave another good account of themselves despite deteriorating batteries and a puncture which further hampered their progress.

They secured another creditable fifth place as a result of their efforts, with plenty of things planned already over the next 12 months to achieve bigger and better things at next year’s competition.

Mr Sutton, said: “Overall it was a very good learning experience for Chay, Henry and Jacob that will stand them in good stead as they look to improve their performance next year.

“Plans are to build a battery testing rig, install some temperature and monitoring equipment on the car and improve motor cooling system due to the problems we encountered this time.”
