Royal Hospital School Attempts New World Record for Largest Quick Step Dance

Posted: 1st July 2024

Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Holbrook, Suffolk is delighted to announce that it has successfully attempted to set a new World Record for the greatest number of people performing a Quick Step dance simultaneously at a school. This remarkable achievement took place on Thursday, 27th June 2024, as part of their Giving Day festivities. The total number of people dancing the Quick Step at the same time at the school was 458.

The Giving Day was held in support of RHS’ Centennial Bursary Campaign, a fundraising initiative launched in 2023 to support 100 students with bursaries at the school by its centenary in 2033.

Event Highlights:

  • Date: Thursday, 27 June 2024
  • Time: Registration began at 14:30, with a rehearsal at 14.45 ahead of a quick break. The dance commenced at 15:10
  • Location: RHS Parade Ground
  • Music: RHS’ talented school band performed a Quick Step rendition of the classic “Holbrook” live during the event

This historic event brought together pupils, staff, governors, parents, and alumni in a vibrant celebration of school spirit and unity. The entire dance routine was expertly captured by professional photographers and videographers including a drone.

The dance was taught through a comprehensive tutorial video and in-person sessions led by RHS teacher David Corby along with his wife Jane, who are regular competitors in the world of ballroom dancing, competing in senior (over 35) categories all over the country

Thanks to the overwhelming participation and generous support of RHS’ donors, completing the dance unlocked a special challenge fund of £5,000. This amount has been added to RHS’ Giving Day current fundraising total of £124,191 (as of now) significantly contributing to the Centennial Bursary Campaign.

Simon Lockyer, Headmaster, commented on the World Record attempt, saying: “We are incredibly proud of our community for coming together to achieve this record-breaking feat. This event not only showcased our school spirit but also raised essential funds for a worthy cause. Last year we raised over £100,000, which meant we could support 14 children coming to the school who otherwise wouldn’t be able to do so. This year we were even more ambitious and are delighted to have exceeded last year’s fundraising total by £20,000.
