A team of four Year 6 pupils from Truro School Prep have achieved a 2nd place success in the Quiz Club National Mathematics Final in Oxford, which took place on Friday, June 28th, 2024.
The team of Cornish children, consisting of George, Oliver, Ayden and Jensen were selected after qualifying with the four highest scores in the Quiz Club National Mathematics Area Heat Champions earlier this year.
The final of the competition, which was held at Oxford University Examination Schools last week, consists of three rounds of ten questions, with each round getting progressively more difficult. Our team was given a pencil and paper to do their calculations, with a time limit of between 20 and 60 seconds for each question.
Some of the fiendishly difficult questions included:
- Take the number of minutes in 9 hours and add the number of sides in 7 hexagons. Take away LXIV and finally divide by the number of legs on a spider. What number do you arrive at?
- Olivia was on holiday and saw a gift she wanted to buy to take home. The cost of the gift was €128 but the shopkeeper agreed to give her a 20% discount. The exchange rate at the time was €1.17 to £1. How much would the gift end up costing in pounds?
With two rounds completed, our Truro Team were in 8th place overall and with questions in the final round worth 100 points each, there was everything to play for. After ten highly complex questions the results were in; our brilliant group of young mathematicians had placed 2nd overall!
We were extremely proud of our maths team; not only for their mathematical ability, but also for their ability to work collaboratively under pressure, their confidence and their strategic thinking.
It was a truly exceptional achievement for George, Oliver, Ayden and Jensen, our brilliant group of young mathematicians.
Head of Maths at Truro School Prep, Mr Danny Goddard remarked, “Our aim at Truro Prep School is for all of our pupils to foster a passion for maths from an early age. As well as providing appropriate challenge and an inspiring curriculum, we aim to build confidence and enjoyment for this brilliant subject, while also developing children’s mathematical fluency, mathematical reasoning and critical thinking skills. Our trip to Oxford was another example of this to round off another fantastic year in Maths at Truro Prep School.”
