A dedicated Sixth Form student from Kimbolton School, James L., proudly represented England at the 2024 Tug of War World Championship, held in Mannheim, Germany, from September 5th – 8th.
James competed as a vital member of the U19 England team, placing 6th overall. He joined approximately 1,500 athletes from 25 nations in a fierce competition of strength, strategy, and teamwork at the prestigious Alsenweg Stadium. The event, which drew in more than 15,000 spectators, stands as a key highlight in the international Tug of War calendar.
James’ journey to the World Championship encompassed rigorous preparation, including a challenging team hike up Blencathra in Cumbria, where the England squad trained at the summit to build endurance, resilience, and team camaraderie. His attendance at this year’s games followed his successful participation in last year’s championship in Switzerland, showcasing his ongoing dedication and growth in the sport.
James was also joined by Kimbolton School Reception Teaching Assistant and former student at the school, Verity Wootton. She competed as part of England’s women’s team in the 540kg competition, winning a silver medal in the final. Verity also competed alongside the Bedford ladies team in the open competition, where the team came fourth place overall.
