One current and one former pupil of Felsted School have been named in squads to represent their countries in forthcoming international netball competitions.
On the basis of her outstanding performance in recent trials, Lilia B, a 14-year-old pupil at the independent boarding and day school in north Essex, has been selected to represent Ireland in the Under-17 age category. Lilia will take part in the national squad’s monthly training sessions and will be in contention for selection for the European Championships later in the year.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old Poppy Tydeman, who attended Felsted between 2009 and 2021, has been named in the 18-player Welsh Feathers Long Squad. Poppy will line up in defence for Wales this season in a series of international competitions, leading to the Netball World Cup in 2027.
Felsted has produced a string of international athletes over the decades in a variety of sports, including rugby, shooting and cricket. Netball at the school is led by former England and Super League player Lindsay Keable and six current pupils are members of U13 County, U15 and U19 Performance Academies for high-profile Netball Super League teams London Pulse and Saracens Mavericks, with whom the school has partnerships.
‘These are both extremely impressive achievements,’ said Lindsay Keable, Felsted’s Director of Netball. ‘Lilia will be on court alongside athletes three years her senior and Poppy has a chance to compete in the World Cup. Both have a great work ethic and commitment to the game that will stand them in good stead as they have the honour of representing their countries.’
Felsted offers elite pathways for exceptionally talented athletes, which include individualised training and nutrition programmes. The school’s dedicated teaching and coaching team with a number of current or retired elite athletes, along with additional sporting partnerships and close connections with professional clubs including Saracens Rugby Club and Sunrisers Women’s Cricket, coalesce to challenge pupils of all abilities, encouraging a healthy attitude to fitness and exercise.
