BSA launches family guardian scheme

Posted: 7th March 2025

Although many international students reside with BSA Certified Guardians or the equivalent during exeats and half terms, many live with family members or family friends which presents potential safeguarding and compliance risk.

For peace of mind, BSA has introduced a new BSA Certified Family Guardian Scheme which involves:

  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • Online training on the responsibilities of a guardian and an overview of safeguarding responsibilities
  • Certificate confirming the host is a BSA Certified Family Guardian upon completion of the above steps
  • Access to ongoing advice and support

BSA Director, David Walker, commended the scheme:
“It is fantastic to be able offer this extra level of safeguarding to further ensure the safety of international students who have arrangements to stay with family and friends out of term time”.

This new scheme will enable schools to demonstrate compliance with National Minimum Standard (NMS) 22, due diligence to UKVI, and reassure parents they take the safeguarding of international students seriously.
