Course outline

The how to guide for teaching PSHE. This course helps participants learn about and develop skills to teach PSHE including health and relationships education. It explores themes and resources that help participants to deliver up to date and meaningful health education for 4 to 14 year olds.

Training topics will include

Promoting health literacy that encompasses illness
Helping young people to build resilience by taking ownership of their physical and mental health
Encouraging a whole school commitment to self-care and wellbeing

Pete Kirby – Curriculum Developer, Facts4Life

A former Deputy Headteacher in the primary sector, Pete has now been working in the field of health and wellbeing for much of his professional life. He has been both an educator and the Programme Development Manager for Coram Life Education, as well as a Lead Teacher with Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning. He has a broad knowledge of PSHE encompassing substance misuse education, social norms and effective processes of delivery in PSHE.

Pete is passionate that PSHE is a key component of the curriculum for all children and sees Facts4Life as providing a unique and vital strand within that. Pete has helped develop the Facts4Life educational resources and been involved in training and supporting schools in implementing the resource and approach into their school curriculum.

Dr Hugh van’t Hoff – Director, Facts4Life

Hugh is a practising GP and founder of Facts4Life. He spent several years working in hospital medicine until his outlook was profoundly altered by post-graduate training in tropical medicine. Here he learnt about the narrowness of traditional western medical teaching set against the wide context of international public health.

He began applying his understanding in inner city Bristol during his training as a GP. This was where Facts4Life was born – a unique approach to health literacy and resilience combining the expertise of multiple sectors. The collaboration of health and education professionals has led to the development of an innovative curriculum that gives permission to children, young people and their parents to explore illness and health and build confidence in managing the ups and downs of life.
