Course outline
At certain times we may be involved in breaking bad news or dealing with someone who is newly bereaved. This course looks at the process and support available that could be utilised to help during this period. The holder will learn skills to be able to empathise with and manage the ongoing wellbeing of the affected person. The session will teach delegates how to have sensitive conversations that may well impact on how the affected person deal with their situation or loss.

Lee Glaser, Director, HIEDA
Lee has extensive experience in pastoral care. Prior to becoming Headmaster and CEO at Taunton School in Somerset he was the School’s Deputy Head which involved leading the pastoral team and being the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Outstanding support for student and staff wellbeing has always been at the heart of his approach and the School was recently shortlisted for a TES Award for excellence in this area.
Lee has always worked closely with the School’s medical team which provided excellent support to the community, particularly during the COVID pandemic. He is excited to be supporting HIEDA members in delivering the highest quality of care in their own environments.
Paula Talman, Outreach Director, ShawMind
Paula is the Outreach Director at ShawMind a charity on a mission to improve mental health awareness. They are committed to educating individuals and organisations so they understand mental health & emotional wellbeing, and how to manage them effectively to lead successful, fulfilled lives’.
Paula created a mental fitness, school resource which supported over 500,000 children during the pandemic. Paula is a registered nurse in both adult and paediatric nursing. She has a MSc in Nursing Science and over 25 years of experience in family centred health care. A leader in the provision of children’s mental health and wellbeing education, former school inspector, safeguarding consultant, mental health first aid instructor and mindfulness teacher. 2 x innovation award winner and a Forbes featured Great British Entrepreneur 2021.
Paula has a wealth of experience in child development and mental health within both the hospital and educational setting. Paula’s passion is to support children with their mental, emotional, physical and social development as they journey through life. Paula’s mission is to protect and improve the mental fitness and wellbeing of over 25 million children by 2025.
Tracey Boseley, National Development Lead for the Education Sector at Child Bereavement UK
Tracey’s links with the education sector began early in her career as she developed an outreach programme for schools and universities. This led her to qualify as a teacher and she has taught across the primary phase. She specialised in supporting vulnerable pupils and their families, particularly young people with autism and sensory processing disorder. In 2018, Tracey joined Child Bereavement UK; her role includes raising the profile of bereavement across the education sector, research projects, supporting education professionals, developing resources and content for training courses. She has also designed online resources for education professionals in collaboration with London Grid for Learning.
Erika Crossley, Boarding School Counsellor, Berlin Brandenburg International School
Erika Crossley holds a Master’s degree in clinical nurse leader from Xavier University in the United States and has worked in paediatric oncology and psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She has worked in boarding schools in the UK and Germany as a school nurse, health and wellbeing manager and counsellor. Erika spent almost a decade working in boarding schools in the UK in both the state and private sector, and travelled around the south-west delivering SRE education. She also served as a DSL and holds a certificate in counselling.
Erika currently works as the Diversity, Equity and Anti-Racism Coordinator as well as the Boarding School Counsellor at Berlin Brandenburg International School.
