First Year Sport, Exercise and Coaching students delivered an Inclusive Table Cricket Festival for pupils from Brymore Academy, Bishop Fox’s School and Heathfield Community School, at Richard Huish College.
Table Cricket is an indoor miniature version of cricket, designed to allow those with physical challenges or learning disabilities to enjoy the sport and compete.
Played on a table tennis tabletop, players take turns in a bowler vs batsman 1 on 1 to score for their team of six.
The Huish students were trained by Somerset Cricket Foundation on how to deliver the session and acted as officials for the school matches.
The bowling pupil uses a device to aim the ball across the table to their opponent who uses a miniature bat to strike. The batsman aims to hit the scores of 2, 4 or 6 (runs) marked alongside panelled sides of the table, avoiding being ‘bowled’ or ‘caught’ out by hitting a ‘fielder’ marked on the table or through other means.
The activity session allowed pupils of all abilities to let their competitive spirits thrive and work as a team and gave the Huish students valuable experience leading others.
Visiting with the Heathfield students was their SEND Reviewing Officer, Harvey Revolledo. Harvey is a former Huish Sport student, Class of 2017, who progressed to the University of Plymouth to study Primary Education with a specialism in PE.
He shared “it’s great to work with children with SEN and watch them having the opportunity to socialise and learn how to play as a team”.
