A Level Spanish students at Richard Huish College recently embarked on an exciting and educational trip to Salamanca, Spain.
The trip gave the students a fully immersive experience of Spanish culture and a chance to enhance their speaking and interpretation skills.
They stayed with Spanish families, attended a language school, and took part in activities led by local guides, including a flamenco lesson with an Andalucian teacher.
During their five-day trip, each morning started with a three-hour Spanish lesson at the local university to help improve their skills and linguistic techniques. The lessons included two hours of Spanish grammar, and an hour of oral practice, which involved them participating in a debate, murder mystery activity, and more.
After morning lessons, they had lunch with their host families and experienced Spanish cuisine. Throughout the week the students also visited local restaurants and took part in an authentic tapas tour and churros and chocolate tasting. One student commented, “the culinary highlight of the trip was the paella dinner on the last night where the group sat down together to enjoy the traditional Spanish dish”.
The afternoons consisted of cultural activities, including a city tour, a walk up the cathedral tower, a photo rally, and a couple of treasure hunts. A student shared “It was very warm and sunny in Salamanca, which made the trip even more special for everyone involved as the views were stunning to see, especially at the top of the cathedral”.
Another student commented, “Overall, the trip was an incredible experience for us and a testament to the MFL department’s success”.
During the trip, the students also visited a secondary school where they spoke to Year 11 pupils in both English and Spanish, making the conversations beneficial for all involved. Moreover, they got a better understanding of what Spanish education is like.
