A former Richard Huish student has won a national award for outstanding work and commitment to her Business course while studying at college.
Huish alumni, Lucy Sims has been awarded the National BTEC Business and Enterprise Learner of the Year Silver Award after being nominated by BTEC Business, Marketing and Management Course Manager, Sharon Williams. Institutions nationwide can nominate their learners before they are assessed by Pearson, the UK’s largest awarding organisation for offering academic, vocational, and work-based learning qualifications.
Sharon said “Lucy came from a home-schooling background and from day one entered Huish with a big positive smile. She worked incredibly hard to ensure the work she submitted was presented to a high standard. She demonstrated great passion for the subject and used research to showcase her understanding, ensuring her points were evaluative and justified to maximise her potential.
Lucy never complained, she enjoyed completing challenging tasks that made her question herself or business theorists. Within the Event Management unit when the class were struggling to receive local business donations, Lucy took it upon herself to bake delicious cakes to ensure her event was a success and although tired from all the baking still managed to serve her customers with full attention and a smile!
“Lucy truly is an inspiration; she worked so hard to achieve academically but will always reserve time for others that are in need of support. She genuinely was a joy to teach. Lucy successfully achieved D*D*D* on the Extended Diploma in Business course”.
Upon discovering she had won the award, Lucy said “I am grateful that I was even nominated for the award, so I was extremely surprised when I found out I had won it. I really appreciate the amount of encouragement and support I received from my teachers, especially since I didn’t meet the formal entry requirements for the course. I didn’t have the teacher-assessed grades used during the pandemic, but I really wanted to go into business as a career, so the Extended Diploma was the perfect choice and I really enjoyed it.
I’m now working in Business Development and Marketing. My time at Huish on the BTEC course has helped me within my job role because it taught me many different sectors in Business, how to manage my time, and many team working skills. My advice for new starters is to plan your time and utilise it wisely by starting assignments as soon as you receive the brief and start revising early”.
