Course outline:

Moving up into senior education is often considered as an inevitability that will work out in the end “because everyone goes through it”. This webinar explores the complexities of school transition, offering insights to the psychological processes involved, the challenges that may arise, and practical guidance on how to support students in each phase of their transition to senior school. Early transition experiences are known to bear influence well beyond childhood, setting the tone for future experiences of life transitions, academic and professional success, as well as shaping self-esteem and identity.  Recognising that everyone has a unique set of experiences, personality factors and perspectives, we explore strategies that can contribute to building resilience, a strong sense of belonging and authenticity, all of which bolster and protect wellbeing while facilitating school transition.

Training topics will include:

  • The process of change – phases of transition
  • Psychological factors in transition and impacts on wellbeing
  • How school transition differs from other changes children experience in their lives, including developmental considerations
  • Transitioning to the boarding environment – additional considerations
  • Common issues arising from school transitions and recognising signs of them
  • Strategies to support successful transition, including ideas for prep departure and senior induction programmes

Learning outcomes:

  • Have an understanding of the psychological processes and impacts of school transition
  • Be able to recognise when a student might be struggling with their school transition
  • Be equipped with strategies to support children as they transition from prep to senior school
