After launching a co-curricular club based on a famous magical world, St George’s School, an independent day and boarding school for girls in Edinburgh, has observed a heightened interest in science among young girls.
The Harry Potter-inspired ‘Potions Class’ allows primary-age children to learn about science in a fun and engaging way. By combining scientific knowledge with magical elements, the Potions Class makes learning enjoyable and memorable. This approach not only boosts their understanding of science but also encourages creativity and a love for learning.
Head of St George’s Junior School, Lisa Nettleton, said: “We introduced the Potions Class in response to feedback from parents about the need to modernise the clubs available to students and promote academic excellence, so out went classes in road safety and in came Potions Classes.
Whilst we can’t cook up a Shrinking Potion or provide Polyjuice for Polyjuice Potion-making, we do babbling beverages, gooey glitter glue and pungent perfume. I’m pleased to say our Potions Class takes place in a nice warm classroom rather than a cold, damp dungeon but, just like Hogwarts, our students are provided with wizard hats and capes and learn what Professor Snape referred to as the ‘exact science’ of potion-making.
Since introducing Potions Class we’ve noticed our younger pupils are more curious about the natural world. They are transferring the measuring skills acquired in the potions club to the classroom. This means our Potions Class is cooking up Liquid Luck when it comes to girls studying science and entering STEM careers.”
The school is focused on providing a well-rounded education, giving equal importance to both co-curricular activities and academics. This balanced approach helps students develop not only intellectually but also personally and socially, preparing them for the future. The school’s Activities and Clubs programme, making up the co-curricular programme, offers a wide range of opportunities for students of all ages and interests. With a variety of experiences and events, the programme aims to inspire and engage students. Whether a student is interested in sports, arts, sciences, or other areas, St George’s encourages students to explore their talents.
