Mount St Mary’s College Mount St Mary’s College is a Catholic co-educational boarding and day school (ages 11-18) situated on the borders of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire, yet is just minutes from junction 30 of the M1. Its preparatory school, Barlborough Hall, for ages 3-11 is only a mile away. Parents choose Mount St Mary’s and Barlborough Hall School because of the emphasis on each pupil as an individual. Pupils transfer automatically aged 11 from Barlborough to the Mount. As Catholic schools in the Jesuit tradition, the ethos is to provide an education that allows pupils to develop their talents – academically, socially, physically and spiritually. Mount St Mary’s is proudly non-academically selective but achieves outstanding results, with pupils leaving for top universities. In 2012, when results nationally dipped, the Mount continued to increase its performance at A level and GCSE. Some impressive results were gained in traditionally challenging subjects like A level Physics, where all students received A grades. The value added achievements of other students are a testament to the commitment and dedication of the teaching staff. The College places great importance on the extra-curricular activities, rated outstanding in the recent ISI report, and strong reputations for Music, Drama and Sport. Music enjoys an excellent reputation within the local area. A number of choral and instrumental ensembles have enjoyed success in national competitions such as the National Festival of Music for Youth, as well as local festivals, and several pupils are members of national organisations such as the National Youth Orchestra. Rugby is the main boys’ sport; the current 1st XV have just completed an undefeated season and frequently produce regional and international players. As well as rugby the pupils achieve regional and international honours in a wide variety of other sports including, netball, ice hockey and ice skating. The College’s prestigious athletics stadium provides an outstanding opportunity for the pupils to train to a high level and the elite player programme enables this. The opportunity for casual and weekly boarding is a very attractive option, particularly for those living over an hour away from College. This allows students to make the most of the extensive extra curricular programme, supervised study and less travelling time. In the sixth form a large number of pupils choose to weekly board in order to experience independence and prepare for university. The outstanding facilities and accommodation are not only utilised by the College but as an internationally recognised venue used by national organisations.
