Students from Stephen Perse Cambridge have returned from a once-in-a-lifetime sports tour to South Africa.
30 students from Years 9 to 12 embarked on the journey to Cape Town, honing their netball and hockey skills while also having the opportunity to explore a different culture, spot exotic animals on safari trips and volunteer with the community.
The group spent ten days developing their sporting skills in training sessions and matches against local teams, and enjoyed learning about South African traditions, including match ceremonies and gift-giving as a sign of respect.
Alongside sports matches and safaris, the students also volunteered their time to support a community programme run by Be The Difference Foundation, where they were able to coach children in hockey and netball and helped to prepare school meals.
Year 13 student, Daisy W, said: “The sports tour was amazing. I loved playing against different schools and meeting new people, it was so much fun volunteering and coaching the younger kids. It was a very eye-opening experience, which made us realise how lucky we are. It was a trip I will never forget!”
Charlotte Wells, Director of Sport at Stephen Perse Cambridge, said: “This exciting trip offered students many new opportunities and unforgettable memories. Throughout their training and matches, they displayed the dedication that we instil in all our students and were eager to engage with the local teams and their culture. The group showcased great respect for South African traditions and I was impressed by their willingness to help the community.”
Netball and hockey are among a variety of sports offered at Stephen Perse Cambridge, where students are provided with a range of state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities. In addition to a large 4-court Sport England sports hall, the school gives access to traditional and all-weather pitches, outdoor courts and cricket nets and has its own private river access, to ensure that every student can pursue their desired activity.
