This year, Queen Mary’s School celebrates a remarkable milestone: its centenary anniversary. For 100 years, the school has been a pioneer in providing exceptional all-girls education, focusing on nurturing ambition, confidence, and leadership in young women. As the school celebrates this significant achievement, its legacy is one of empowerment, growth, and an enduring commitment to shaping strong, independent women.
The celebrations got underway on Sunday, 23rd March, with a memorable reunion at Duncombe Park, the original home of Queen Mary’s School. Over 150 Old Maryans (alumnae) returned to reconnect and reflect on their time at Queen Mary’s. Welcomed by Jake Duncombe, the gathering brought together generations of former students to reminisce about their shared experiences. A particularly poignant moment was the reunion of former Director of Music Nick Carter with more than 40 members of the Chapel Choir, spanning four decades. After a rehearsal in the Chapel, attendees gathered in the Saloon for a special service, which featured contributions from Tom Fielden, Chair of Governors, Head Carole Cameron, and School Chaplain, Revd. Michael Price, among others.
Reflecting on the reunion, Mia McKean, an alumna, shared her sentiments: “What a truly amazing day! It brought back some of the happiest days of my life with the most wonderful girls and staff… one for the memory bank!” The reunion was a moving celebration of the bonds that have lasted far beyond the classroom, with alumni reconnecting in the stunning surroundings of Duncombe Park, which has been at the heart of the school for generations.
Looking forward, the next event in the centenary celebrations will take place on 5th May with the “Party in the Park” at Baldersby Park, Queen Mary’s beautiful 40-acre location in North Yorkshire. This event will not only celebrate the school’s rich history but also highlight the significance of all-girls education in the UK. With performances, games, food stalls, and a big top tent, the day promises to be a joyful occasion for the entire community. It will be a chance for families to come together and celebrate the unique educational environment that has helped so many girls excel both academically and personally. The event will honour the values of leadership, empowerment, friendship and service that have been central to Queen Mary’s School for the past century.
Another key moment in our 100 years celebrations will be a Centenary Service at Ripon Cathedral on 23rd May. This will be a special occasion to commemorate the school’s legacy and the many generations of students who have been part of our journey.
The grand finale of the centenary celebrations will take place in July with a Centenary Ball, a fitting end to a year that will be remembered for its reflection on the school’s past, present, and future.
A key moment in the school’s centenary year is the transition of leadership. After many years of dedicated service, retiring Head Carole Cameron will pass the torch to Fe Beadnall, who joins Queen Mary’s from Barnard Castle School. Mrs Cameron’s leadership has been instrumental in the school’s continued success, and her commitment to empowering young women has shaped the lives of countless students. Fe Beadnall brings her own passion for all-girls education and is determined to continue the school’s mission of nurturing confident, capable leaders in the next generation of pupils.
As Queen Mary’s School celebrates 100 years of excellence, it remains committed to its vision of providing an empowering educational experience for young women, helping them become leaders, innovators, and change-makers. Here’s to 100 more years of inspiring young women to reach their full potential.
