Course outline

This talk discusses the considerations for supporting international students with their health and wellbeing. We will look at planning ahead, encouraging information sharing and planning for medical issues that may occur in the school setting. We will also explore medication management and confidentiality.

Caring for a pupils safety within the guidance and UK law, we will look at the changes in the guidance during 2022 that have initiated changes in this provision in the school setting. We will discuss the increased involvement of the child in the ownership of their medical condition whilst being supported and educated in preparation for life beyond school. We will talk about gillick competency and consent of the young person particularly in relation to mental health support. One of the many issues raised is the decision to remain in boarding when mental health issues arise, we will talk about what help schools support pupils with these needs.

Speaker: Lee Glaser, Director, HIEDA

Lee has extensive experience in pastoral care. Prior to becoming Headmaster and CEO at Taunton School in Somerset he was the School’s Deputy Head which involved leading the pastoral team and being the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Outstanding support for student and staff wellbeing has always been at the heart of his approach and the School was recently shortlisted for a TES Award for excellence in this area.

Lee has always worked closely with the School’s medical team which provided excellent support to the community, particularly during the COVID pandemic. He is excited to be supporting HIEDA members in delivering the highest quality of care in their own environments.

Emily Kane, Sister in Charge of Health Centre, Taunton School
Qualified as a Childrens’ Nurse in 1999, from the Queen’s University of Belfast. Worked in various fields of paediatric nursing including medical, surgical and A & E, in both Northern Ireland and England. Moved into independent school nursing 8 years ago firstly in a small co-ed prep school and now as Sister in Charge of the Health Centre at Taunton School, Somerset.
