Course outline
Whether you teach PSHE or not, some of the topics covered in the PSHE curriculum will come up with the boarders in your house at some point. In this seminar we will explore how to prepare for conversations about healthy lifestyles, nutrition and positive relationships to name a few and how we can provide a safe space for these discussions. PSHE conversations in boarding contribute to compliance with NMS standards on promoting positive relationships and health in our boarding houses.
Learning outcomes:
- Building confidence in handling ‘tricky’ conversations
- Developing awareness of PSHE frameworks
- Creating safe spaces for boarders

Gaelle Sullivan, Director Research and Inclusion, BSA, Director TIOB
Gaelle is Head of Research Services and Inclusion and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East.
Sue Bruce is Head of PHSE and Housemistress at Fettes College. Following graduation in a BSc Hons in Geoscience at St Andrews University, and whilst I enjoyed my degree, I went on the Brunel University to do my teacher training in PE. Quite quickly I realised that guidance and pastoral care was the area of teaching I wanted to be involved in.
Fettes College fulfilled my intent when I was appointed Head of Girls Games and subsequently, House Parent and Head of PSHE. I am a BSA Accredited boarding practitioner, a member of the Charted college of teachers, a member of the Education Committee at a local Prep School, the Welfare Officer at a local tennis club as well as the longest-serving Senior House Parent at Fettes College (16years!).
