Course outline:

A significant focus on inspectorate judgement of pupil wellbeing is the way in which organisations prevent, identify and respond to child-on-child abuse.  Inspectorate judgements refer to evidence of specific child-on-child training for everyone in direct and indirect contact with children and young people.

Whilst there is a particular focus currently from education regulators the safeguarding systems managing child on child abuse are a key safeguarding practice consideration for charities, voluntary and private sector organisations in discharging their safeguarding duties and promoting welfare.

This briefing will cover key knowledge and awareness topics within the child-on-child abuse strand of safeguarding including recent updates from KCSIE 2024 for those delegates to which it applies.  It includes a case study example that is used to review and apply learning content.

Training topics will include:

  • What is child-on-child abuse?
  • Why is awareness of child-on-child abuse so important?
  • Links to contextual safeguarding.
  • Prevalence of child-on-child abuse.
  • What the curriculum does to address the problem of child-on-child abuse.
  • Why your response is important?
  • Working case study example.

Learning outcomes:

  • Delegates will explore the various strands of child-on-child abuse.
  • Delegates will review the prevalence of child-on-child abuse.
  • Delegates will appreciate the links between child-on-child abuse and contextual safeguarding.
  • Delegates will be able to pinpoint and articulate what their organisation does within formal and informal curriculums to address the problem of child-on-child abuse.
  • Delegates will develop a greater understanding of the importance of their response to child-on-child abuse.
  • Delegates will have the opportunity to process the briefing content through the presentation of how it can be applied to a case study example.

Claire Dan, Director of Safeguarding and Director, Sacpa

Claire is Director of Safeguarding and Director, Sacpa and leads on the provision of safeguarding advice and support to members and the development and delivery of CPD and safeguarding consultancy services. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare, youth justice, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.
