Course outline:

The beginning of the school year brings with it a buzz of nervous excitement as new students bring new energy to their schools. Many schools go to great lengths to welcome their newcomers, most of whom will have had various tours and visits, an induction day at some point during the previous summer term, as well as a week-long settling-in programme at the beginning of term. By October half term, there’s usually a feeling that the dust has settled somewhat – so how do we make sense of the “November Dip”, when in the weeks following the half term break, emotions run higher, homesickness rears its head and there’s a tangible shift in the new cohort dynamic? This webinar explores  the reasons behind this phenomenon, reframes existing conceptualisations of the induction period, and discusses ways in which the induction programme can be extended and optimised to better reflect the full school transition process and ensure that transition-specific student wellbeing needs continue to be met.

Training topics will include:

  • Exploring school transition – perspectives on the “settling in period”
  • Evidence-based reasons to extend your school’s induction programme
  • Addressing the November Dip and recognising students’ evolving psychological needs in transition
  • Strategies and tools for extending the induction programme

Learning outcomes:

  • Have a deeper understanding of the of the phases school transition and related psychological processes and impacts
  • Recognise the benefits of an extended induction programme for new student wellbeing
  • Be equipped with strategies for restructuring the induction programme
