Course outline

Schools have noticed an increasing issue around pupil absence, both ad hoc and persistent. This gentle trend pre-Covid has accelerated in recent years. This half day seminar aims to give context to the issue to help schools identify if they have an issue. We will then look at strategies schools can employ both internally and in working with external partners.

Training topics will include:

  • The national absence picture and patterns and trends from the boarding sector
  • Using the Early Help framework for dealing with EBSA (emotionally based school absences).
  • Strategies for engaging help from the local authority
  • Case studies
  • New statutory guidance around attendance which now applied to independent schools.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the national and boarding specific context around pupil absence
  • Writing a clear school attendance policy
  • Using the escalation policy for the local safeguarding board.
