Boarding Orchard

The Boarding Orchard was launched by the BSA in 2014 and is probably the world’s largest orchard by distance. It also has official support from the British Royal Family!

The scheme involves boarding schools joining the orchard by planting fruit trees in their grounds. The trees symbolise the ‘tree of knowledge’ and demonstrate each school’s commitment to growth and caring for the environment.

Our interactive map tells the story of every tree planting as the orchard has grown over time and brings the global orchard to life. In 2020, the Boarding Orchard was officially supported by King Charles III who called it ‘an excellent way to promote environmental awareness’.

The BSA Boarding Orchard celebrates its 10th anniversary

September 2024 marks the BSA Boarding Orchard’s 10-year anniversary! Launched in 2014, the first tree was planted at Steyning Grammar School in West Sussex and has grown steadily ever since. Trees have been planted in schools across the UK – including Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and we’re delighted to see them popping up at our international member schools in locations as far as Texas and South Carolina in the US, India and Malaysia.

As part of our 10-year anniversary celebrations, we’re calling on those who have joined the scheme to share a photo with us to show how the orchard has grown and matured over time. Our aim is to create a visual representation of the orchard and encourage even more tree plantings as we continue to grow the Boarding Orchard.

The BSA Boarding Orchard scheme is part of our BSA Active engagement programme.

Join the BSA Boarding Orchard

Help us grow the BSA Boarding Orchard by planting a tree in your school grounds. The process is simple:

  1. Let us know your intention to plant a tree via bsa@boarding.org.uk
  2. Find and agree a location for your tree planting
  3. Buy a fruit tree sapling of your choice. The best time of year to plant a tree is during the winter months. Click here to view our handy fruit tree planting guide.
  4. Where possible, we love to visit our member schools to attend a tree planting. If you would like a member of the BSA Team to attend the tree planting, please let us know and we will be pleased to arrange.

Once your tree is planted, please share a photo with us and we will add your school to the BSA Boarding Orchard interactive map.
