A multitude of our Richard Huish College’s Sports teams have successfully made it through to the AoC Sport Regionals after competing with different colleges from across the South West. Both Men’s and Women’s Basketball battled through in their respective games, as did Mixed Hockey team to secure their place in Nationals alongside the Cross-Country team.
Cross Country runners Sky Mclaughlin and Niklas Silaste both qualified for Nationals after completing a 5km cross county trial at the end of October held at Strode College.
The Men’s Basketball team qualified for the AoC Nationals for the 3rd consecutive time after a tense regional tournament that took place at Huish. They defeated teams from Yeovil, Petroc and Truro but it was against Exeter College where they faced the biggest challenge and the final hurdle to qualify for nationals. The games were 10 minutes with a running clock so every possession was valuable. Huish started well and took an early 7-0 lead but Exeter managed to claw back to make the game tight, but a free throw and some big defensive stops in the clutch was enough to secure a 8-7 win for Huish.
The Hockey team picked up 2-1 wins against Truro and Exeter in Regionals. Coach Ieuan Davies spoke on the performance saying “Everyone applied themselves to the best of their ability and really enjoyed the experience. It was the first time for all the players representing the College in an AoC Regional Hockey tournament and there were some nerves in the team. However, all the players calmed their nerves by focusing on the game plans we set out for them with great positivity, tenacity and speed. We played with great attacking intent in all the matches, creating many opportunities to score. It was a real team effort and as coaches, Jason and I, are super happy with how they all performed in such a professional confident and selfless way for the benefit of the team”.
