Upper Sixth Richard Huish College student Katie Shattock recently travelled to Ivrea, Italy, to compete in the 2022 ICF Junior Canoe Slalom World Championships. She participated in a range of individual events including Kayaking, Canoeing and Extreme Slalom, and the Kayak and Canoe team events.
In the team events, Katie and the two other paddlers representing Great Britain managed to rank 8th in the Kayak event and 5th in the Canoe event. For the individual events, Katie successfully qualified for the semi-finals in both the Kayak and Canoe events and eventually finished 20th in Kayak and 28th in Canoe. The last event she competed in was the Extreme Slalom where she qualified in the time trials but narrowly lost out in the heats. Katie spoke about her performance saying “I am very proud with the results I have managed to come away with in my first major international event”.
Katie will now return to the UK for three weeks of training and a behind-the-scenes experience at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as part of the Team England Futures where she will get the opportunity to meet the athletes and their support network. After this, she will be competing in the European Championships which are taking place in Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic which gives her another chance to compete for glory.
