Glenalmond College in Perthshire, one of the UK’s leading independent boarding schools, is looking forward to welcoming a Ukrainian pupil thanks to a bursary initiative which will provide a fully funded place from September 2022.
The majority of the funding for the initiative has been provided by a £100,000 award from The W M Mann Foundation, established by the parent of pupils at Glenalmond, along with additional support from other parents and sponsors.
Glenalmond College has worked with HMC, the association of heads of the world’s leading independent schools, and Ukrainian Global Scholars as part of the initiative which will see a fully funded boarding place awarded to a pupil.
The 14-year-old recipient of the award is currently safe in Poland and will travel to the UK this summer ahead of the start of the new term at the award-winning school for 12 to18 year old.
“The formation of The W M Mann Foundation Scholarship will enable a child fleeing the war in Ukraine to receive a Glenalmond education in a safe and secure learning environment which offers an all-round education which has the potential to be life-changing,” said Bruce Mann, chair of The W M Mann Foundation and father of two Glenalmond pupils.
“I am delighted to have been able to get the initiative underway quickly and efficiently working with the team at Glenalmond, who are actively looking for ways to support pupils from Ukraine,” Mr Mann added.
The bursary will not only support the pupil’s education at Glenalmond, it will include the costs of her travel, uniform, sports equipment and tuition for extra-curricular activities such as specialist music or sport. Importantly, it will also cover travel costs to allow her parents to visit the school, non-uniform clothing and ‘tuck’ will be part of the overall package awarded for the pupil.
As with all new pupils and their families, a very warm welcome is being extended from the close-knit Glenalmond community, and the hope is the initiative may encourage like-minded benefactors to offer support further deserving youngsters from Ukraine.
