Two year 13 pupils from Christ’s Hospital school, near Horsham, delivered record-breaking performances at the British Junior Classic Championships, in Solihull, on Sunday April 30. Nonso, aged 18, and Joshua, aged 17, not only both achieved first place in their respective weight category but also broke records along the way!
In what was only his second ever powerlifting competition, Josh came first in the 120kg+ weight category in the sub-junior class. He broke the sub-junior British deadlift record to lift 328kg, as well as the British bench record, by 5.5kg, to lift 165.5kg. He also smashed the British total record for his weight class (which means the total of all three lifts combined), achieving the highest ever total in the country by an under 18.
Nonso came first in the 105kg weight category in the sub-junior class. He broke the national squat record by 5.5kg, lifting 275.5kg, as well as the total record by 48.5kg, lifting 778.5kg. In the deadlift section, Nonso broke the world record he had previously set by 13kg, lifting a whopping 343kg! As a result, he now holds both the U18 and U23 deadlift world record.
‘We are extremely proud of Nonso and Josh’s incredible achievement. They have shown a huge amount of dedication and determination and so it is especially good to see their efforts so handsomely rewarded’, said Head Teacher of Christ’s Hospital, Simon Reid. ‘We look forward to watching their progress!’
