Local charities have benefited to the tune of more than £4,000 thanks to the efforts of children aged four to 13 who took part in Felsted Prep School’s Harvest Festival service and Fun for Funds Fete.
Families, friends and pupils enjoyed a traditional Harvest Festival service in the school’s on campus chapel, near Dunmow in Essex, on Saturday 16 September. They donated generously to the retiring collection, which raised £915 for Little Havens Hospice and also brought with them donations of food and clothing, which will be transported via the school’s charity, Felsted Aid, to people in need in Ukraine.
After the Harvest service, pupils in Year 8 organised and ran a fete to raise money for five charities they chose themselves to support. Stalls – from ‘Guess the Teacher from the Baby Photo’ and Lucky Dip, to Face Painting and The Stocks! (giving children the opportunity to throw a wet sponge at their teachers) – were extremely popular with visitors and raised £2,367, to be shared equally between Farleigh Hospice, The David Randall Foundation, The Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, Braintree Foodbank and the Ruth Strauss Foundation.
‘This was the first opportunity for our Year 8 pupils to show their service and leadership skills and they most certainly impressed,’ said Mrs Miranda Norris, Head – Felsted Prep School. ‘It is so important for children to understand their responsibility to help others, whether in our own local community or around the world.’
Year 9 pupil Charlie K took the opportunity to raise funds for the Grace O’Malley Kumar Foundation. His book stall generated £1,000 for the charity.
