Say it with cakes: Felsted pupils deliver home-baked goodies to thank local heroes

Posted: 20th February 2024

Key workers and members of the emergency services had a pleasant surprise recently when pupils from Felsted Prep School dropped off boxes of sponges, pastries, cheesecakes and scones that they had made themselves as a token of their appreciation for their dedication to our community.

The children, aged seven to 13, learnt to make the sweet treats as entries into the school’s own Bake-off competition, but after the winners were announced, the pupils got to work boxing the cakes and loading them into school buses to be presented to local heroes. Deliveries were made to Dunmow Fire Station, Farleigh Hospice, Glendale Care Home, Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance and Broomfield Hospital children’s ward.

‘Mrs Paine and Mr Maclean told me that the pupils wanted to do something to show how much they value the key workers in our local community, and they thought giving some of them a cake to go with a cup of tea would be a way to brighten their day,’ said Felsted Prep Head, Miranda Norris. ‘I am delighted to say that the pupils were able to meet some real life superheroes and the delicious cakes succeeded in making people smile and feel appreciated.’

Felsted School has always been mindful of its role in public service and has a long history of pupils and staff supporting charitable causes as well as their local and wider community with both financial help and practical assistance. Reverend Nigel Little, the school’s Chaplain, comments; ‘Voluntary work and fundraising takes place all year round at Felsted and the school has links with many charities, large and small. The student-led School Charity Team develops a programme of events and ideas to encourage pupils and staff to participate in fundraising initiatives and selects the good causes to benefit from the proceeds’. Older students at the school also spend time assisting at food banks and night shelters. Later this month, a group of Felsted Sixth Form boarders, along with a team of dedicated staff, will be gearing up for an incredible challenge; running a half marathon in support of these charities connected with the school.

Felsted School recently won Boarding School of the Year 2023 at the TES Schools Awards in June. Learn more about how Felsted makes a difference: www.felsted.org/makingadifference.
