ROEDEAN’S sixth form netballers showed a visiting male netball squad how to play the game properly when they thrashed them 13-7, all in the name of charity.
The Year 13 players had challenged a team from Tonbridge Boys to try and beat them, with the aim of raising money for their year group’s charity the NGO Hope4.
Whilst 15 boys got to grips with the game as the Roedean team deftly scored goals, the animated crowds filled the coffers for the charity by buying raffle tickets, cookies and hot chocolate plus posing for caricature drawings and clay models done by a Year 12 artist at a price.
After many calls of contact and obstruction, the Tonbridge boys began to understand how they could use their significant height advantage to gain possession. But this was quickly counteracted by Roedean’s excellent use of bounce passing, particularly through the legs.
As the crowds began to build, the atmosphere intensified with the encouragement of passionate loud cheers from spectators. The boys showed a valiant effort through mid-court and defence but unfortunately were let down too many times by the execution of the shooters. Ultimately the girls’ skills and tactical knowledge proved too much for the boys and Roedean prevailed.
More importantly, some £800 was raised for Hope4. This NGO is based in Moldova and was set up to fight the devastating effects of poverty, human-trafficking, conflict and natural disaster across Moldova, Ukraine and Turkey. Roedean has been working with the charity for some years and pupils travel out to Moldova each year to help teach young children English and help out at an orphanage, which it supports to the tune of £5000 a year.
Deputy head Ross Barrand said: “It was great fun and there was fantastic support from a very vocal crowd. Well done to both teams for getting involved and being part of an event that has helped us to raise money for our charity Hope4. We hope next year’s Year 13 will retain our winning streak!”
