Downside School is the top performing school for value added scores in the Bath and Wells region and has also consistently scored in the top 5% of schools across the United Kingdom, according to the latest data released by the Department of Education.

Value-added (VA) performance scores provide a key measure of the impact of teaching and learning at Downside. Rather than simply looking at raw exam results, these scores show how much progress students make compared to national benchmarks, reflecting the difference that high-quality teaching, academic support, and our learning environment contribute to their success. According to the recently published Department of Education A-level and BTech value-added statistics, Downside pupils achieved higher value-added scores than all schools in the Bath and Wells region and has also consistently scored in the top 5% of schools across the United Kingdom.

Michael Randall, Deputy Head commented, “This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work and ambition of last year’s leavers, supported by our exceptional teachers, who go above and beyond to provide expert guidance and tailored academic support. These statistics highlight the significant impact of a Downside education in helping our pupils exceed expectations and realise their full potential.

A Downside education is about far more than exam success, though these results are proof of how we empower our pupils to exceed expectations. At Downside, pupils don’t just gain knowledge; they develop the confidence to think independently, the resilience to tackle challenges, and the leadership skills to inspire others. Whether they are deepening their understanding through our academic enrichment programmes, making a real impact through social action initiatives, sharpening their critical thinking in national debating competitions, or building teamwork and determination on the sports field, every experience at Downside is designed to shape well-rounded individuals who leave not only with outstanding results but also with the skills, values, and ambition to thrive in life beyond school.”
