Sedbergh School is delighted to announce an exciting and transformative dual appointment that will strengthen its already world-renowned rugby programme. Sam Moore has been named Head of Rugby, while John Fletcher joins as Technical Advisor. This dynamic duo is set to take Sedbergh School rugby to new heights, cementing its status as the premier destination for aspiring rugby players of all levels, both boys and girls.

Sam Moore’s appointment follows an extensive global search, where he emerged as the outstanding candidate from a world-class shortlist. An Old Sedberghian himself, Sam’s vision for the future of Sedbergh rugby is both ambitious and strategic. Central to his plans is the development of a pathway that seamlessly transitions players from Prep School to Senior School and beyond into BUCS universities or the professional game. His passion for the sport, coupled with his exceptional rapport with pupils, staff and parents, makes him the perfect leader to drive Sedbergh rugby forward.

“As a proud Old Sedberghian, I am thrilled by the challenge of leading an internationally recognised school rugby programme and inspiring the next generation of talent,” said Sam. “I want to create exceptional experiences for all pupils, built on high-class coaching throughout Sedbergh School Football Club (SSFC). My playing career allowed me to achieve international success, representing England Schoolboys at U16, U18, and U20 levels, as well as being named a full England senior squad apprentice under Eddie Jones. I also played professionally for Sale Sharks, Cardiff, and the Ospreys, and I can’t wait to bring my experience and passion to Sedbergh.”

Joining Sam in this exciting new era is John Fletcher, a globally respected coach who has developed pathways and programmes responsible for producing some of the biggest names in rugby. His expertise in player and coach development will be instrumental in implementing an ambitious five-year vision for SSFC. John is responsible for delivering the Rugby Football Union’s nationally recognised Director of Rugby Coaching Award and has worked in numerous elite coaching environments, giving Sedbergh a unique advantage in preparing its players for the highest levels of the game.

John said, “Sedbergh has long been synonymous with excellence in school rugby, and I am excited to work alongside Sam to further elevate the programme. With a clear vision, best in class coaching, and an outstanding group of players, the future of Sedbergh rugby is incredibly bright.”

Under Sam’s leadership, Sedbergh will continue to provide leading outreach sessions with key partners in prep schools and clubs, ensuring that the next generation of talent benefits from the best coaching and development opportunities available.

Dan Harrison, Headmaster said, “For many years, Sedbergh has been a leader in school rugby, and I am absolutely thrilled with these two outstanding appointments. Sam and John bring unparalleled expertise, ambition, and passion, ensuring that our rugby programme not only continues its proud tradition but reaches even greater heights.”

As Sedbergh School celebrates its historic 500th year, this announcement marks a defining moment for its rugby legacy. With Sam Moore and John Fletcher at the helm, Sedbergh pupils will have access to an unparalleled rugby education, further solidifying the school’s reputation as the best rugby institution in the country.
