Shebbear College Launches New Sixth Form Sports Scholarships

Posted: 1st April 2025

Shebbear College is inviting excellent sportsmen and women to join its Sixth Form this September, with the introduction of a groundbreaking new scholarship program. This initiative will not only significantly reduce tuition fees but also provide talented athletes with unparalleled opportunities for growth and development.

Under the new ownership of Inspired Learning Group (ILG), which acquired the school last year, Shebbear College is proud to offer a range of new Sixth Form Sports Scholarships. These awards are designed to make the school more accessible to aspiring athletes, with discounts on tuition fees for successful applicants. This exciting initiative reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to excellence in sport and its ambition to nurture the talents of young athletes, reinforcing Shebbear College’s reputation as a small school which punches above its weight in the sporting world.

“We understand that in today’s economic climate, the decision to choose an independent school is a significant one for families, particularly in our region. For many, this choice may feel out of reach,” said Charlie Jenkins, Head of Shebbear College. “We believe it’s our responsibility to make Shebbear College more accessible and by offering these substantial tuition fee reductions, we hope to open the door to new students, celebrate sporting excellence, and provide new opportunities for our athletes.”

Shebbear College has long been known for its sport, with its biggest asset being the strength of its PE staff, who between them have a plethora of qualifications, coaching experience and playing experience – including an ex-England rugby player. The school’s sports teams regularly compete at a national level and recent successes include competing at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Netball Finals, the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) National Finals, the ISA Swimming National Finals, the National Golf Championships and the ISA National Athletics finals, securing outstanding results.

“The level of talent at Shebbear is truly remarkable,” said Paul Nicholls, Head of Sport. “While we excel in traditional sports like rugby, hockey, netball, and football, we also have a thriving presence in niche disciplines such as equestrian, basketball, and golf. We’re equally committed to expanding opportunities for girls’ sports, particularly in rugby and football. Our Sports calendar is extensive and includes opportunities for everyone – our U14 and U16 rugby players are currently on a high, having just returned from the Rosslyn Park National School Sevens Tournament!”

The new Sports Scholarships are designed to attract talented athletes to Shebbear’s Sixth Form, enhancing the success of existing teams and providing new opportunities for students that may not be available elsewhere. With Shebbear’s small size, the school encourages participation in sports for all its pupils whilst at the same time allowing its keen sportsmen and women to focus on their individual sporting ambitions.

“These scholarships will allow us to build on the success of our current teams and provide new opportunities for students who may have previously thought an independent school was out of reach,” continued Paul Nicholls. “We believe that participation in sports is crucial for the holistic development of our students, instilling discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills that will serve them well in all aspects of life. We’re excited to expand this opportunity and encourage all aspiring athletes to apply.”

The application process is simple and accessible, with an easy-to-complete form available on the Shebbear College website.
