A young swimmer dived headlong into fierce competition and came up covered in gold.

Barnard Castle Preparatory School pupil Violet Ellis took the honours in the 200m individual medley, 50m front crawl, 200m front crawl and the 100m breast stroke at a gala in Leeds.

The Year 5 pupil, of Moulton, near Middleton Tyas, hopes one day to compete at the Olympics and trains six days a week.

In her most recent competition the 10-year-old travelled to the John Charles Centre in Leeds, representing Richmond Dales Swim Club, where she also achieved four personal bests.

“I have been swimming since before I was one-year-old and just really enjoy it,” she said. “Not many people are that good at swimming and I’d like to be very good when I am older.

“I really love my school too especially as we do a lot of sport and have our own swimming pool.”

Violet has been selected for the county squad and is now training with children up to the age of 13.

Barnard Castle Preparatory School director of sport Martin Burgess said: “Violet is incredibly committed and I think only takes one day off a week from her swimming. The results are clear to see and four golds and four personal bests is an amazing achievement and thoroughly well deserved.”
