Founded in 1858, West Buckland is a thriving co-educational independent day and boarding school with approximately 650 students. The school enjoys a beautiful 90 acre campus set in the heart of North Devon countryside on the edge of Exmoor. The school offers a strong academic curriculum along with sport, outdoor education, performing and creative arts and many other extra-curricular activities. West Buckland School has become an IB World School, offering the IB Careers Programme from September 2023. A-level and GCSE results are amongst the best in the South West, nearly all students gain a place at their first choice of university.
The school has a lively, diverse boarding community that enjoys attractive accommodation. There are 4 boarding houses on site: Gables – accommodates boys and girls in Years 4-6; Boyer – for boys Years 7-11, Bamfylde – girls in Years 7-11 and Parker’s for girls and boys in Years 12-13. Boarding students are under the supervision of caring houseparents who live adjacent to the houses and are on duty from early evening until the following morning.
Some boarders will be involved in sports fixtures on a Saturday but there are several weekend activities on offer, including trips to nearby cities, a full weekend schedule in London, surfing and coasteering on our stunning coastline, paintballing, cooking, bowling and regular shopping trips to Barnstaple, just 10 miles away. In addition, there are a lot of evening activities to get involved in which include dance, volleyball, art, singing, movie nights, football, scuba diving, keep fit and swimming.
